February can be a cold, dreary month. But we aren’t far away from warmer weather, sunnier days and the earliest spring flowers. If you’re over the winter blahs, consider late February and early March a perfectly reasonable time to start making subtle decor shifts in anticipation of what’s to come. The design pros here at Third & Main are sharing some of our favorite decor tweaks to bridge between winter and spring.
Keep Layering, But Do It Lightly
Cozy layers are what we all strive for in late fall and winter. And you don’t have to give up the layers to transition to spring—you just need to lighten them up for more balance. Simple swaps, like switching out the chunky knits and felted wool cushion covers with lighter, more breathable knits (think linen and cotton) give your space a softer, more relaxed feel. Layering thinner throws keeps things feeling cozy and adds dimension, but it’s a little fresher—just like spring.
Work In Softer Hues
We’re drawn to rich, deep colors when it’s cold out, but spring calls for lighter, softer hues. Ivory and taupe are excellent colors across both seasons, and you can play up seasonal colors, like blushes, dusty blues, and soft yellows, to emphasize winter or spring. Lighter colors reflect light better and contribute to a fresher, brighter space, and if you aren’t a fan of pastels, gentle earth tones work just as well. As you change up your layers, take the opportunity to update your color scheme as well.
Think about complementary color pairings as well. The winter-spring transition is a great opportunity to blend soft winter shades, like dark gray, with cheerful spring colors. It’s a simple way to balance the cooler winter aesthetic with the vibrancy of spring.
Make A Statement In The Entry
Your home’s entryway makes an immediate impression, so it’s a great spot to showcase seasonal decor. We’re champions of a less-is-more approach, so take the opportunity to swap out essential pieces, like doormats and floral arrangements. Spring is all about fresh new life, so incorporate natural elements to add texture, pops of color and an organic vibe.
The Takeaway On Bridging Winter-Spring Decor
This time of year is a true go-between from one season to the next. If you’re getting cabin fever, consider it a great time to begin the transition to a lighter, brighter home. Switching to lightweight fabrics (but keeping the layers) maintains the sense of coziness without the weight. Softer colors and natural elements are a nod to spring, too, and a few well-chosen decor pieces go a long way!
